About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Chasseneuil-du-Poitou, La Taverne - Table de caractère offers an inviting brasserie experience that celebrates classic French flavors with a distinctive local twist. This charming French restaurant and seafood brasserie is a must-visit for those eager to indulge in an authentic culinary journey that skillfully balances tradition and character.

From the moment you step inside, La Taverne envelops you in a warm, if somewhat understated ambiance, where friendly waitstaff ensure you feel right at home. Though the décor leans towards simple and functional, the true star here is undeniably the kitchen, where every dish is crafted with evident passion and commitment to quality.

The menu dazzles with a rich variety of French specialties, each plate bursting with vibrant textures and comforting aromas. Seafood lovers will revel in the Moules Marinières — succulent mussels bathed in a fragrant white wine sauce that perfectly captures the essence of the sea, albeit sourced somewhat inland. The Fish & Chips here strikes a satisfying balance between crispy golden batter and tender, flaky fillets, elevating this British classic with a French flair.

For those craving heartier fare, the Choucroute Spéciale and Choucroute de la Taverne offer flavorful, slow-cooked sauerkraut paired with savory smoked sausages and tender cuts of meat, embodying Alsatian rusticity at its finest. Meat aficionados should not miss the Pavé de Rumsteak Français de Notre, a beautifully seared French rump steak, its richness amplified by expert seasoning and masterful cooking.

Complement your meal with delicacies like Escargots de Bourgogne — buttery snails infused with herbs — or indulge your sweet tooth with classic desserts such as Ile Flottante, Crème Brulée, or the decadently smooth Chocolat Liégeois. The Café Gourmand offers a delightful end to your dining experience, serving a petite selection of mini desserts alongside a robust espresso.

Notably, La Taverne extends its hospitality through exquisite wines and refreshing beers available for takeout, perfect for continuing the French vibe at home. The winter 2025 wine selection impresses with organic and biodynamic options like Domaine des Garances’ Beaume de Venise and Louis Jadot’s Bourgogne Pinot Noir, while the beer list offers unique brews with intriguing flavor profiles, from citrusy notes to rich maltiness.

Customer experiences echo the quality of the kitchen and service. Iris Peters fondly recalls dining with family, praising the warm atmosphere and attentive waiters for creating a perfect evening. Olivier Rahier highlights the professionalism and fair pricing, reinforcing that excellent quality is at the core of La Taverne’s value proposition. Even more discerning palates, like Jo_H’s, commend the food’s quality and reasonable pricing, especially the shellfish platters, despite noting minor critiques about ambiance and fish freshness due to the inland location.

Ultimately, La Taverne - Table de caractère is a destination for those who seek a genuine taste of French culinary tradition, where every dish tells a story through robust flavors and meticulous preparation. Whether you’re gathering with loved ones for a celebratory feast or simply savoring a relaxed meal, this brasserie leaves a lasting impression — a true table of character in every sense.

With our 2 daughters and their boyfriend (6 adults in total) we enjoyed the ambiance and certainly the food in the restaurant. Waiters were friendly and everything was perfect. Really recommend this restaurant !

You can tell they put most of their resources towards the food, it was very good value although no fresh fish because it's too far away from the coast. The atmosphere is a bit dark and the decoration is lacking personality. I went with my family and shared dishes. We had the day's menu. The skate wing was not the best fish I have had. I would recommend the shell-fish platter (plateau de fruits de mer). The desserts are very large and home made.
